Discourse, as a coherent oral or written linguistic communication, interacts with translation in
significant ways, as translation allows discursive content and functions to cross language and
culture borders. This interaction impacts both discourse and translation. On the one hand,
translation acts as a vehicle through which many new formal and conceptual properties are
introduced to target discourse. On the other hand, transferring discourse from a culture to
another usually represents a real challenge for translation which pushes translators to
continuously review and improve translation approaches and strategies.
Discourse, both written and spoken, covers a large body of human communication. Given the
role discourse plays in society in expressing identity and ideology and fulfilling socialization
functions, it follows that the motivations behind translating discourses, the extent to which
various discourse types are translatable, and whether translation as a mediator manages to
transfer all components of source discourse are worth investigating.
This national conference aims to serve as a platform where researchers from around the
country can get together to share their groundbreaking research on discourse and translation
studies and the interplay between them.
